30th Anniversary of the Srebrenica Genocide: Thousands, White Shirts, and Unforgettable Pain
This year, on July 11th, marks 30 years since the horrific genocide in Srebrenica, an event that forever marked the history of the Balkans and humanity. Organizers expect that up to 150,000 people will attend the memorial center in Potočari, a number that overshadows many other commemorations worldwide.
Five victims to be buried in Potočari As part of the anniversary observance, the burial of five exhumed victims is planned, with a funeral prayer (dženaza) to be held at the memorial center. Families have been urged to approve the burial of their loved ones, regardless of the number of recovered and identified remains. This act is a symbolic reminder of the injustice and pain that has lasted for decades.
March of Peace and thousands of participants The March of Peace, one of the most important events, will start on July 8th from Nezuk, and a day later from Žepa. So far, over 4,000 participants have registered, including 88 organized groups. Arrival in Potočari is planned for the afternoon of July 10th. This year, organizers have provided shower cabins for women, a small but significant step towards improving conditions for participants.
White shirts and scarves – symbols of innocence and dignity Associations will distribute white shirts and scarves for free, symbolizing the innocence of the victims. Munira Subašić, president of the Movement of Mothers of the Srebrenica and Žepa Enclaves, has called on everyone to come dressed in white to pay dignified tribute to the victims.
Why is this important? The genocide in Srebrenica is not just a historical event – it is a wound that still bleeds. Commemorating the anniversary with such a large number of people sends a clear message: the victims will not be forgotten, and the truth will be passed down through generations. In a world where terrible truths are often silenced or denied, such events are a beacon of justice and remembrance.
Just imagine – 150,000 people in one place, all in white, in silence and prayer. This is not just a commemoration; it is a massive call for peace, justice, and humanity. If it seems like too much, remember that this is the number of those who do not want history to repeat its darkest moments.
Now, as you read this, ask yourself – what are you doing to ensure such tragedies never happen again? Or are you just a bystander? If you have something to say, or maybe a witty remark, feel free to drop a comment. Let the voice be heard, even if only through a screen.
