72nd Pula Film Festival: Comedy, Premieres, and a Regional Film Revolution

72nd Pula Film Festival 2024: Comedy, Premieres, and a Regional Film Revolution!

Get ready, film lovers! The 72nd edition of the Pula Film Festival has finally arrived, bringing a spectacle you don’t want to miss. This year, under the patronage of Croatian President Zoran Milanović, the festival opened with the premiere of the comedy “Južina” by young Split director Ante Marin.

A Comedy That Will Make You Laugh and Think

“Južina” is not just any film – it’s a hilarious comedy set in an ordinary Split neighborhood, where ordinary people become heroes and villains through a series of misunderstandings and intrigues. The main roles are played by Snježana Sinovčić, Donat Zeko, and Stojan Matavulj. The film promises laughter, tears, and suspense.

Regional Film Scene in Full Bloom

But that’s not all! This year, the festival opened its doors to regional films through a new program section “Regional Film,” which further promotes dialogue and exchange between neighboring countries’ cinematographies. Four Montenegrin films, including the feature documentary “Vremeplov” by Senad Šahmanović and the feature film “Otapanje vladara” by Ivan Salatić, found their place in the selection, marking a big step for regional cooperation and promotion.

Festival Under the Starry Sky of the Ancient Arena

The Pula Arena, the most beautiful open-air cinema, is once again the host, where the audience can enjoy 11 Croatian and 7 minority co-productions. Every evening until July 17, expect screenings of the latest Croatian films and world blockbusters, along with talks with film crews and critics, enriching the festival experience.

Documentaries Shedding Light on Past and Present

A special place is held by the documentary “Paviljon 6” by Goran Dević, which humorously depicts the pandemic times and the disorientation of people waiting in line for vaccination. This film reminds us how quickly we forget and how the world around us changes, all through sincere and witty conversations.

Pula Pro: Education and Networking for Film Professionals

The festival is not just for the audience – the Pula Pro program gathers domestic and international film professionals for workshops, panels, and pitching sessions, aiming to support new talents and project development. This year, the program is significantly expanded, showing how seriously the festival takes its role in the film industry.

The Anthem in a Different Way

The festival opening was also marked by Damir Urban, who performed the Croatian anthem “Lijepa naša domovino” in his recognizable style. His words about love for the country and patriotism added a special touch to the ceremony.

Why Is This Festival Important?

The Pula Film Festival is not just a place to watch films – it’s a place where culture, art, and regional cooperation meet. In a changing world, the festival shows that film can be a bridge between people and countries, and it can be fun, laughter, and tears all at once.

If you thought film was just for the cinema, think again! Pula brings a film revolution under the stars, with comedies, documentaries, and regional hits. And if you’ve been to the festival before, you know the atmosphere is irreplaceable – a true film party!

So, what are you waiting for? If you’ve already seen “Južina” or any of the regional films, drop a comment and tell us what made you laugh the most or touched your heart! And if not, maybe it’s time to get ready for the next screening – because Pula never sleeps, and neither do the films!
