EPS, our beloved Electric Power Industry of Serbia, has decided to make our lives a bit more complicated! Starting June 2024, all Belgrade households will get a new payment reference number on their electricity bills that changes every single month. Yes, you read that right – a new number every month! The last four digits of this number now represent the year and month of the billing period, so for example, the June bill will have a reference number ending with 2506. For other regions, this change has already been in effect since January this year. But wait, there’s more – EPS is pushing us to switch to e-bills, which they claim is eco-friendly and convenient. Currently, about 100,000 users have embraced this option, and those who opt for e-bills get a 50 dinar discount every month. The e-bill arrives instantly by email as soon as it’s generated, no waiting, saves paper, and protects the environment. Plus, you can track your consumption on the EPS portal or app. Sounds like a step towards digitalization and saving the planet, right? But is it really that simple? Imagine how many people will have to adjust to these new reference numbers, and what if someone isn’t tech-savvy enough to handle e-bills? EPS boasts a 50 dinar discount, but is that enough to break our old habits? And in the end, isn’t this just another way to cut down on paper and save costs, while we consumers get stuck with extra hassle? If you’ve got thoughts on this, or you’ve already received your new reference number and want to share your experience, drop a comment – maybe together we’ll uncover what’s really going on behind EPS’s digital curtain!
