THE POLITICAL FARCE THAT SHOOK ČAKOVEC!
Imagine this: the former mayor of Čakovec, Stjepan Kovač, known for his political career, decides to play the victim. No, this isn’t a scene from a bad movie, but a real drama that unfolded in Croatia! Kovač, together with former policeman Mario Sever, orchestrated fake threatening messages — all as part of a political battle to gain sympathy ahead of the local elections in May.
How did it all start? It all began in April, just before the local elections. Kovač filed a defamation complaint against an unknown perpetrator, but police inspector Sever quickly realized it was just a smokescreen. Sever and Kovač, with the help of a third man, Damir Ledenčan, devised a plan: Ledenčan sent fake threatening messages to Kovač, which were then reported to the police as real threats. All this to create an image of being threatened and to gain political support.
The punishments that followed The County Court in Zagreb was not immune to this political game. Kovač was sentenced to 10 months of community service, while Sever received ten months in prison, part of which was conditional, and a five-year ban from working in the police. Ledenčan pleaded guilty and received nine months in prison with a three-year probation period.
But that’s not all! Sever, besides this scandal, was also accused of leaking secret police measures to a group of car dealers, further tarnishing his reputation. The court clearly stated that such punishments should serve as a warning to anyone who thinks they can abuse justice for personal or political gain.
Acting or tragedy? Kovač publicly cried at a press conference claiming he was being threatened, and was supported by the then SDP president Peđa Grbin. However, police recordings and evidence showed that the tears were fake, and the whole story was a political manipulation at its lowest level.
What does this say about politics and the police? This affair reveals deep problems in the political system and the police. When politicians and police officers manipulate justice together, public trust in institutions falls into an abyss. Is this just the tip of the iceberg? Will justice truly be served, or will such practices continue in silence?
Conclusion This story is a perfect example of how politics can become a dirty game, and institutions abused for personal interests. Kovač and Sever have been punished, but the question remains how many such cases are hidden from the public eye.
If you think this is just another political soap opera, think again. This affair is a warning for all of us to stay vigilant and demand accountability from those who represent us. So, what do you think about these political games? Were the tears genuine or just another act? Drop a comment, let the voice of the people be heard!
