Wimbledon Shock: Mektic and Dabrowski Crash Out in First Round of Mixed Doubles!
Thought Wimbledon was just a place where legends are made? Think again! Croatian tennis star Nikola Mektic, one of the world’s best doubles players with 31 career titles and a former world number one in doubles, teamed up with Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski, and what happened? They got knocked out in the very first round of the mixed doubles! Yes, you read that right — first round exit!
How Did This Happen?
They lost to the fifth seeds, American Robert Galloway and Indonesian Aldila Sutjiadi, who won 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. But here’s the kicker — Galloway and Sutjiadi only got into the tournament at the last minute after a more famous pair, Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin and German Laura Siegemund, withdrew due to injury. So Mektic and Dabrowski lost to a last-minute replacement team!
Why Is This Such a Shock?
Nikola Mektic is a doubles specialist, currently ranked 13th in the ATP doubles rankings and a former number one. Expectations were high for him and Dabrowski to go deep, not to crash out immediately. This is definitely one of the biggest upsets at this year’s Wimbledon.
What About Other Croatians?
While Mektic stumbled, his compatriot Mate Pavic is shining! Pavic and his partner Marcelo Arevalo advanced to the round of 16 in men’s doubles, beating Spaniards Pedro Martinez and Jaume Munar convincingly 6-3, 6-2. They will face the Czech duo Petra Nouza and Patrik Rikl.
Meanwhile, Mektic and his New Zealand partner Michael Venus bowed out after losing to Brazilians Rafael Matos and Marcelo Melo in three sets: 7-6(3), 5-7, 7-6(6). In the deciding set, they missed a break at 5-5 and in the tiebreak led 4-2 but then allowed the Brazilians to win seven of the next eight points and convert their second match point. Talk about choking under pressure!
Wimbledon Is No Place for the Complacent
This tournament has shown that no one is safe. While Mektic exited early, Croatian star Marin Cilic stormed into the round of 16, defeating Spaniard Jaume Munar 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Cilic proved he’s still got what it takes to compete at the highest level.
The Bottom Line: Wimbledon Madness!
If you thought Mektic would breeze through, think again. Wimbledon is a tournament of surprises where legends fall and new heroes rise. Mektic and Dabrowski showed even the best can falter, while Pavic and Cilic demonstrated Croatia’s tennis strength remains intact.
Is this the beginning of the end for Mektic in doubles, or just a bad day? What do you think? Drop a comment, share your conspiracy theories, or just have a laugh with us!
