“The Old Guard 2” Sequel Disappoints Viewers Despite Record Netflix Viewership

Netflix’s “The Old Guard 2” — The Most Watched Yet Most Hated Movie!

After five long years, fans finally got the sequel to the action-packed hit “The Old Guard.” But instead of a triumphant return of immortal warriors, what did we get? The biggest disappointment of the year! Yes, you read that right. The most-watched movie on Netflix right now is also one of the most slammed.

Viewership vs. Quality — The Netflix Paradox

“The Old Guard 2” shot to the top of Netflix’s most-watched list worldwide and in Croatia immediately after its July 2 release. But while millions hit play, critics hit back hard. Rotten Tomatoes scores are abysmal: just 28% positive reviews from critics and 44% from audiences. For comparison, the first film scored a stellar 80% from critics and 71% from viewers.

What Went Wrong?

The story follows Andy (Charlize Theron) and her team of immortal warriors facing a new threat — Discord, the first immortal warrior played by Uma Thurman. While promising action and moral dilemmas, the film fails to deeply explore its characters and their relationships. Critics unanimously panned the technical aspects — terrible lighting, awful sound echo, and poor fight choreography ruining the experience.

Kevin Maher of The Times was brutal: “The problems kill the film — terrible lighting, awful sound echo, bad fight choreography — fundamental script errors.” Karoline Sid from AV Club admits the film is still watchable because of the characters but can’t recommend it as a standalone piece. Benja Lin from The Guardian calls it a rushed attempt to wrap up the story and suggests it might be the end of the franchise.

Audience Shock and Reddit Meltdown

Viewers quickly flooded Reddit with negative comments. One user confessed, “It was terrible, does anyone else think the sequel completely flopped? I was so excited, now I’m lying in bed totally disappointed.” Others criticized the character Discord for lacking depth and a shallow backstory.

Many sympathize with the cast, knowing they gave their all but deserved much better material. Some even admitted they couldn’t finish the movie due to the poor script, unconvincing acting, and choppy fight scenes.

Bottom Line: Popularity Isn’t Quality

Despite “The Old Guard 2” currently holding the title of Netflix’s most-watched movie, that doesn’t mean it’s good. The sequel disappointed both critics and audiences, even though the first film was one of Netflix’s most successful action projects.

If you loved the first film, you might still want to watch the sequel out of curiosity or nostalgia. But most will agree this sequel isn’t worthy of the original’s legacy. We’ll have to wait and see if Netflix continues with this franchise or lets it fade away in the shadow of its first success.

So, what do you think? Just a bad day for “The Old Guard” or is Netflix really losing its touch? Drop your thoughts — let’s see who else is disappointed or maybe even thrilled!
