33 Years of Bloody Truth: Why Remembering Serbian Victims in Central Podrinje and Birac Still Fights for Justice
Every year on July 5th, people gather in Bratunac who refuse to let history be erased. This year, Minister Nenad Popović made sure to attend the holy archierical liturgy and memorial service to honor the Serbian victims from Central Podrinje and Birac. Yes, 33 years since the horrific Muslim crime against the Serbian people in this area, but does anyone really listen?
Blood-Soaked Land and Forgotten Victims
Bratunac, a land soaked with the blood of innocents, a place where many Serbs lost their lives fighting for freedom and honor. Popović clearly stated that their sacrifice is “built into the foundations of our existence, our spirituality, and national memory.” But how well is this truth really preserved? How much effort is made to ensure the horrors are not forgotten?
Why Is Remembering Important?
Preserving historical truth is not just a formality. It’s a battle against oblivion, against historical revisionism, and against those who would downplay or deny the suffering of the Serbian people. Every year brings new challenges, but also a new chance to remember those who gave their lives for freedom.
The Political Dimension of Remembrance
Minister Popović’s presence at the liturgy is not just a religious act, but a political message. In times when truth is often tangled with propaganda, such events serve as a reminder of the importance of truth and justice. Will the government and society continue to nurture this tradition, or will the memory be left to fade away?
What Do You Think?
Is it enough to hold a memorial once a year? Or should much more be done to preserve and pass on the truth about the suffering of Serbs in Central Podrinje and Birac to future generations? If you have an opinion, share it — maybe your word will wake those still asleep on the topic of historical justice.
Don’t just read — join the conversation! Who knows, maybe your joke or comment will be the one to break the silence around this important topic.
Reminder: July 5th is a day to remember and pray for all innocent victims. Let’s not allow their sacrifice to be in vain.
