New Flights from Niš Airport: Dortmund Back on the Map, But What About Other Destinations?

Niš Airport is Back in Business – But Only to Dortmund?

Did you know that starting January next year, you’ll be able to fly from Niš Airport “Konstantin Veliki” to Dortmund again? Yes, you read that right! After a quiet spell, Wizz Air is bringing back this route twice a week – on Mondays and Fridays – starting January 5th.

But don’t get too excited just yet – this is the only new route confirmed so far. Even though passenger numbers at Niš Airport jumped by 16% in June compared to the same month last year, and cargo transport increased by 36% in the first six months, passenger traffic development still seems to revolve around just a few destinations.

Why does this matter?

Niš Airport is one of Serbia’s key regional airports, and the return of the Dortmund flight is a direct response to passenger demand. This means people from Niš and surrounding areas can finally fly directly to an important German destination, which is a big win for business travelers, tourists, and anyone with family in Germany.

But what about other destinations?

While everyone’s celebrating the Dortmund comeback, the question remains – what about other potential routes? Airports of Serbia announce they are working on new cargo lines, but passenger traffic seems stuck. Is this a sign that airport development is focused only on certain routes, or is there a lack of interest from airlines?

Passenger and cargo growth – is it enough?

A 16% increase in passengers and a 36% rise in cargo transport in the first half of the year sounds great. But is it enough for Niš to seriously position itself on the European airport map? Or will it remain just a regional airport with a handful of weekly flights?

The bottom line

The return of the Dortmund flight is definitely a step in the right direction, but Niš deserves more! More destinations, more flights, more opportunities for travelers and business. If development doesn’t speed up, Niš Airport will remain just another dot on the map, not a true regional hub.

So, what about you? Have you already planned your trip to Dortmund, or are you waiting for new routes to open? Or maybe you have your own ideas about where the airport should fly? Drop a comment and let’s see who’s got the best ideas – maybe you’ll be the one to kickstart the next big flight from Niš!
