Imagine a country where the law applies to everyone except one man – Milorad Dodik! While ordinary mortals get arrested for serious crimes, Dodik strolls free, sings in Banja Luka, and treats the legal system like his personal playground. July 4th marked a legal precedent and an institutional surrender of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Dodik evaded justice for three months, hiding not in the mountains but in offices with special protection, then showed up smiling with a lawyer, and his detention was lifted – a detention that was never really enforced.
While the rule of law lies on life support, Dodik acts as if he is above the law. He dismantles the constitutional order, ignores judges, threatens state institutions, pulls security agency directors, and refuses to accept arrest warrants. And what happens? Nothing! Justice is dead, and institutions are just props.
The opposition and international community either stay silent or pretend not to see. Judges nod, prosecutors are scared, and politicians calculate. It’s all a big farce where Dodik is the winner and the state is the loser. If one man can trample all state mechanisms and remain unpunished, why should anyone else respect the law? This is not just Dodik’s victory; it’s the defeat of the rule of law and all of us.
While Dodik sings in Banja Luka, the people cynically stay silent or laugh – because they know justice doesn’t exist. What happens when the system collapses? Who will pay the price? We, the ordinary citizens, who were the only ones respecting the law. So, while Dodik enjoys his “victory,” remember – tomorrow a new Dodik might come with the same song and the same contempt for the state.
