Ready for another round of chaos? Donald Trump, the former US president, has stirred the pot again by announcing that his administration will send more weapons to Ukraine. Yes, you read that right! White House spokeswoman Carolina Leavitt explained that new Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered the review to ensure every weapons shipment is in America’s best interest.
Diplomatic sources reveal that last week Trump asked his advisors about speeding up deliveries of air defense systems to Ukraine, right after a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump also expressed frustration over the lack of progress in ending the war, especially with Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom he called disappointing for not stopping the bombing of Ukrainian cities.
Republican lawmakers supporting Ukraine welcomed Trump’s announcement, calling it the “absolutely right response” to Russian attacks. However, divisions remain within Trump’s own administration, especially on Ukraine. Some experts say it’s unclear what Trump’s real goal is, and it would be surprising if he took on new commitments previously promised by his successor, Joe Biden.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, the US has provided Ukraine with $66 billion in military aid. Trump confirmed Ukraine’s request for additional Patriot missile systems during the NATO summit, calling them “very effective.” The Pentagon confirmed that, at Trump’s order, it is sending additional defensive weapons to Ukraine to ensure Ukrainians can defend themselves while efforts continue to secure lasting peace.
