In July, Belgrade witnessed a fiery drama that nearly cost 40-year-old Nemanja Š. his life. The man tried to extinguish a fire that broke out on a field along Ovčanski put around 2 PM on Sunday. The blaze, fueled by dry low vegetation, quickly spread over approximately 10 hectares. Nemanja, who was working on auto parts near his weekend house, noticed the fire and bravely attempted to put it out with a shovel. Unfortunately, strong winds fanned the flames, and the smoke likely suffocated him. He collapsed on the field, surrounded by the raging fire, suffering severe burns all over his body.
Firefighters found him around 4:30 PM in critical condition, barely showing signs of life. Emergency services rushed him to the hospital, where doctors are fighting to save his life. Latest reports say Nemanja is still conscious but remains in a critical state.
This fire not only endangered Nemanja’s life but also destroyed about 10 hectares of fields covered with low vegetation. The exact cause of the fire is not officially confirmed, but it is believed that the wind and dry plants contributed to the rapid spread.
This tragedy is a harsh reminder of how dangerous summer fires can be and how quickly they can escalate, threatening lives and property. Nemanja’s courageous attempt to save his property came at a high cost. Is this a warning for all of us to be more careful and avoid trying to fight fires without proper help?
