Ustasha crimes from World War II still send chills down the spine, and one of the most horrifying examples is the fate of Branko Jungić, a Serb whose head was sawed off by Ustasha soldiers. This gruesome act happened on July 8th, and Jungić was only 28 years old. Born in Grbavica, Potkozarje, after serving in the military in Karlobag, he returned to his homeland where he worked as a commercial assistant. His death is not just a number in history – it is a warning to humanity about the monstrous nature of the Ustasha regime.
The Ustashas brutally tortured him because he refused to convert from Orthodoxy to Catholicism. They forced him to kneel on bare ground for a long time, supporting himself with his left hand to keep balance, while they sawed off his head under an apple tree in Grbavci. This crime was so horrific that even the Nazis were horrified by the atrocities of the NDH, whose Ustasha were the main perpetrators.
Unfortunately, the name Branko Jungić is rarely mentioned, but Instagram pages like “Serbia in the Great War” and “Jasenovac” remind us of his fate. This event is not just a historical fact but a living wound reminding us of the dangers of revisionism and glorifying criminals. Recently, Croats, a day before July 8th, celebrated Ustashas, Pavelić, Jure Francetić, and Maks Luburić at a Thompson concert – criminals whose deeds horrified even the Nazis.
Such glorification of criminals and historical revisionism is not only an insult to the victims but also a danger to the future. While some try to forget or justify these crimes, the truth about Branko Jungić and his brutal death must remain alive. As one graffiti says, children will one day see and say: “I won’t go to school, I’ll become a prostitute” – a message pointing to a deep social crisis and moral decay.
This article is not just a reminder of the past but a call for caution and a fight against dangerous historical revisionism happening today. If you think this is distant history, think again – history repeats itself if we don’t learn from it. So, what do you think about glorifying criminals and revisionism? Drop a comment, maybe together we’ll find a way to stop this madness from happening again.
