Storm Chaos in Split: Poljud Stadium and Mornar Rowing Club Devastated!

This morning, Split was hit by a fierce storm that lasted only briefly but left catastrophic damage behind. Heavy rain, strong winds, and hail wreaked havoc across the city. The worst hit was Poljud Stadium, home of Hajduk Split, where the roof was damaged and the pitch flooded. Additionally, the training pitch was destroyed by fallen trees. Club staff and firefighters from Podstrana had to clear the area so the team could hold their evening training session.

But wait, there’s more! The Mornar Rowing Club also suffered damage. The wind lifted the roof off their building, and rain flooded the rooms. Young athletes had to bail water out with buckets. The material damage is still unknown, but the scenes are shocking.

The storm didn’t spare the hall of Croatian judoka Barbara Matić, a two-time world champion and current Olympic gold medalist, where flooding also occurred.

Hajduk’s president, Ivan Bilić, said he will seek all possible help to repair the damage at Poljud. Interestingly, Dinamo, Hajduk’s biggest rival, has already offered assistance.

This storm exposed how vulnerable the city is and how urgently better preparation and infrastructure protection are needed. Split is now struggling with the aftermath, and residents and athletes are in shock. Will anything change, or will we keep watching nature mercilessly batter us?
