Drama near Ugljan: Eight Croatians, including children, evacuated from stranded boat!

On the night of July 11th, exactly at 22:06, a report was received about a boat stranded near the western part of Ugljan island, specifically near the island of Jidula. The boat had eight people on board, including two children, who urgently requested evacuation due to fear of sinking.

The National Maritime Search and Rescue Center in Rijeka immediately launched a coordinated rescue operation. Police officers and the Zadar Harbor Master’s Office responded quickly, and the police boat “Mile Blažonjević” was the closest to the accident site and was immediately engaged in the rescue operation.

All crew members were evacuated without injuries and transported to the Gaženica port in Zadar. It was determined that the boat was stranded by the stern almost along the entire length on the shore of the island, but fortunately, no marine pollution was observed. The owner was ordered to remove the boat as soon as possible, while coastal radio stations are warning all maritime traffic participants about the danger in that part of the archipelago.

This drama reminds us how important it is to react quickly in maritime emergencies, especially when children and families are involved. Could such situations be avoided with better preparation and equipment? Or is this just another reminder of the dangers lurking in the Adriatic?
