Polish 85-Year-Old High School Graduate Fails Again – At Least His Grandson Passed!
Is this the battle of the year or just a tragic comedy? Józef Peruga, an 85-year-old Pole from Kalisz, has failed his high school final exams again! Yes, you read that right – a man who survived a German camp as a child, worked as a locksmith, bus driver, and carpet factory worker, is now struggling with Polish language and math exams. Although he successfully passed oral exams in German, geography, and other subjects, the written tests remain an insurmountable obstacle.
Second time in a row failure, but not the end of the story
Last year, due to vision problems after surgery, he failed to pass the written exams. This year he tried again, but the results brought new disappointment. “I have mixed feelings – I’m happy because at least my grandson passed, and sad because I didn’t,” Peruga told Polish media. Although he announced he might give up, in an interview with the tabloid Super Express, he left open the possibility of trying again next year, maybe even in another city.
A life story that inspires and entertains
Born in Turek just before World War II, Peruga spent time in a German camp as a child. After the war, he trained as a technician and worked various jobs. Sixteen years ago, encouraged by friends, he finished an adult education school that no longer exists. He found inspiration in his schoolmates, especially a friend who successfully passed exams in his sixties. “I thought, if he can do it, so can I,” Peruga recalls.
