Hamas rejected Israel’s withdrawal proposal because it would leave Israel controlling about 40% of the territory, including the entire southern part of Rafah and other areas in northern and eastern Gaza. Israeli sources say Hamas wants Israel to pull back to the lines held during the previous ceasefire before continuing the offensive from March. Israel and Hamas delegations are trying to reach an agreement that would include the gradual release of hostages, withdrawal of Israeli troops, and a complete end to the war. Hamas demands a ceasefire before releasing the remaining hostages, while Israel insists fighting will only stop once all hostages are freed and Hamas is disbanded.
