Baltic States and HIMARS: Preparing for War or Just Hysteria?
The Baltic States – Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania – have decided to buy the American HIMARS rocket system. Why? Because they fear Russia! Not only that, they want to be ready to strike deep into enemy lines, just like Ukraine has been doing for years.
HIMARS is an American multiple rocket launcher that has become a symbol of power and efficiency in Ukraine. With a range of about 70 kilometers, it allows precise strikes on Russian ammunition depots, command centers, and other important targets. Although its effectiveness in Ukraine has slightly decreased due to Russian electronic jamming, it remains a key part of Ukraine’s capabilities.
The Baltic States, which share a border with Russia, don’t want to be blind mice. Estonia’s Defense Minister Hano Pevkur clearly states that the ability to conduct deep strikes is crucial and that HIMARS sends a clear message to Moscow: “We won’t be an easy target!”
But is this real preparation for defense or just hysteria? The Baltic States spend the highest percentage of their GDP on defense within NATO and are buying not only HIMARS but also tanks and other systems. All this is based on experiences from Ukraine, where the war has shown how important it is to have powerful and precise armed systems.
However, there is another side to the coin. Procuring American weapons is not simple – ammunition is also needed, and relations with the US are not always stable. Estonia is already thinking about how to secure enough ammunition to keep HIMARS fully operational.
NATO has increased its presence in the region, with troops and F-35 jets, but the Baltic States don’t want to rely solely on allies. They are also building their own defense systems and weapons factories. All this sounds like something big is being prepared, not just ordinary defense.
In short, the Baltic States are buying HIMARS because they fear Russia might continue its aggression, but also because they want to be ready to strike first. Is it smart or over the top? We leave that for you to decide. And if you have a good joke about rockets and panic, feel free to share it in the comments – you know we love a good laugh!
