Slovakia on the Edge: Will It Even Back the New Sanctions Package Against Russia?
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has been in a diplomatic frenzy over the last 48 hours. Why? Because Slovakia is demanding solid guarantees that the consequences of the planned halt of Russian gas supplies starting January 2024 will be softened. Without these guarantees, Slovakia won’t lift a finger to support the new, 18th sanctions package against Russia.
What’s Going On?
The European Union plans to completely stop importing Russian gas from January 2024. This is part of the strategy to put more pressure on Russia over the war in Ukraine. But Slovakia, a country heavily dependent on Russian gas, doesn’t want to be the one paying the price without any safety net.
Prime Minister Fico made it clear: Slovakia has no objections to the content of the sanctions but insists on guarantees that would ease the harmful effects on their economy and citizens. He emphasized that Slovakia is using its right to unanimity to apply pressure and get concessions, even though the European Commission usually requires only a qualified majority for such decisions.
Why Does This Matter?
Imagine being a country that relies on Russian gas for heating and industry. Suddenly, the EU decides the gas stops flowing. That means cold homes, price hikes, and economic troubles. Slovakia wants assurances of help or compensation before saying “yes” to sanctions.
Negotiations Are Ongoing, Time Is Running Out
Fico said talks will continue over the weekend, and if an agreement is reached, Slovakia will vote for the sanctions on Tuesday. If not, expect serious rifts in the EU and a potential blockade of sanctions that are crucial to pressuring Russia.
What Does This Mean for the EU and the World?
This is yet another proof of how divided the EU is on Russia. While some countries want to be tough and uncompromising, others like Slovakia seek to protect their interests and citizens. Will the EU find common ground or face even bigger splits?
Bonus: Russian Attacks on Ukraine Don’t Stop
While Europe argues over sanctions, Russia continues brutal attacks on Ukraine. In just one night, Russian forces launched 26 cruise missiles and drones on cities across Ukraine. In Chernivtsi, western Ukraine, two people died and 14 were injured. The city declared a day of mourning due to destruction of residential and administrative buildings.
The Bottom Line
Europe is at a crossroads. Will Slovakia and other countries manage to agree and keep up the pressure on Russia, or will their own fears and concerns stop the sanctions? And while political games play out, ordinary people in Ukraine and Europe pay the price.
If you think this is just another episode in the endless soap opera of European politics, you might not be far off.
