Hell on Thassos: Fires That Set the Island and Serbian Tourists Ablaze!
Ready for a vacation nightmare? While most of us are gearing up for summer fun, Thassos, the popular Greek island, is on fire! Wildfires erupted above Glikadi beach, trapping Serbian tourists in the middle of a blazing inferno. The Serbian Consul General in Thessaloniki, Jelena Vujić Obradović, confirmed that all Serbian tourists are safe, but the situation remains tense.
Firestorm and Panic
The fires have not only hit Thassos but also other tourist hotspots like Nei Pori, Leptokaria, and Sithonia. Some hotels were evacuated, and tourists fled their accommodations in panic. Around 50 Serbian families were near the fire’s epicenter, with some temporarily evacuated. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, but power and internet outages added to the anxiety of tourists and their families back home.
Yellow Weather Alert and Risk of New Fires
Greek authorities have issued a yellow meteorological alert due to high temperatures, dry air, and strong winds. This means the risk of new fires is extremely high. The Consul General urges tourists to be extremely cautious, avoid open flames, especially near forests, as fires spread rapidly under these conditions.
Consulate Available 24/7
The Serbian consulate in Thessaloniki maintains constant contact with tourists and relevant services. Tourists can reach out anytime for help or advice. This support is crucial during these uncertain and frightening times.
Tripled Tourist Taxes in Greece
To add insult to injury, Aleksandar Seničić, director of the National Association of Tourist Agencies (YUTA), announced that tourist taxes in Greece have tripled this year! So not only are tourists facing fires and dangers, but their vacations are also getting more expensive.
Conclusion: Vacation or Survival?
While we soak up the sun and plan our holidays, nature is sending dangerous signals. The fires on Thassos are not just a local problem—they are a warning to us all. High temperatures and dry climates are becoming bigger enemies, and tourists are paying the price. Is this another sign that we need to take climate change and its threats more seriously?
If you’ve been to Thassos or plan to go, share your experiences or fears. Are you ready to face a fiery inferno on vacation? Or is it better to stay home and watch the news? Comment, laugh, or rage—but don’t stay silent!
