Fresh Air or Just Smoke and Mirrors?
Is Serbia really experiencing a fresh start in its relations with the United States, or is this just another diplomatic show? Marko Đurić, director of the Office for Kosovo and Metohija, recently spoke with Brendan Hanrahan, acting Assistant Secretary of State for the USA, and expressed optimistic claims about a “breath of fresh air” in bilateral relations. But is it really so?
What’s Behind the Diplomatic Phrases?
Đurić emphasized that Serbia attaches great importance to its strategic partnership with the USA, which is one of the most important foreign policy pillars of the country. He especially highlighted the intensification of economic cooperation, with an increasing presence of American companies and growing trade volumes. In the energy sector, a strategic cooperation agreement was signed, expected to give a strong boost to important projects. Sounds like a fairy tale, right?
But it’s not all so idyllic. Đurić also expressed serious concern about the situation in Kosovo and Metohija, pointing to ongoing provocations and violent actions by the provisional institutions. According to Đurić, Serbia continues to support the territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina in accordance with the Dayton Agreement, including Republika Srpska as its entity. However, he warned about reckless statements and actions by some high officials in BiH that do not contribute to reconciliation and good neighborly relations. So, there is no peace and stability here either.
Economy as the Savior?
The focus on economy, infrastructural connectivity, and projects of common interest sounds like a recipe for a better future. But is it enough to overcome deep political and security problems? American companies are expanding in Serbia, trade is growing, but will this really bring stability or just another layer of diplomatic makeup?
