Kotor, the jewel of the Adriatic and pride of Montenegro, is on the brink of disaster! UNESCO has clearly warned: the status of this world heritage site is seriously threatened, and the culprit is – you guessed it – uncontrolled construction and greed without limits. Kotor is not just an old town; it is a unique synergy of natural beauty and urban heritage, protected as a whole area, not just individual buildings. This uniqueness makes it especially vulnerable.
But that’s not all! Cruising tourism, which has become a real plague, puts additional pressure on infrastructure, destroys the ecosystem, and changes the social context of the local community. Does anyone even think about the consequences?
The cultural editorial Stega joined the appeal of musician Ratimir Martinović and called on the responsible institutions and citizens to wake up and realize that protecting Kotor is a shared duty. If we lose Kotor, we won’t just lose a city, but a part of our own identity. This is not just a story about stone walls and baroque palaces, but about the home of the Bokelj Navy, the only intangible cultural heritage of Montenegro on the UNESCO list.
Such appeals are the last alarm before irreversible consequences. Will someone finally react, or will we allow greed and ignorance to destroy our heritage? Kotor deserves better!
What do you think? Will Kotor manage to keep its status, or will it become another victim of ruthless tourism and construction? Drop a comment, let the voice of the people be heard!
