Turtles in Trouble: How Two Young Sea Turtles Found Near Pula Ended Up Fighting for Their Lives
In a sea full of dangers, two young sea turtles were found near Pula in extremely poor condition. Their story is not just sad but a wake-up call for all of us who care about nature and animals.
What Happened?
The Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Aquarium Pula received two loggerhead turtles that were so weak that small barnacle-like crustaceans called ‘vitičari’ had grown on their shells. These crustaceans are not just annoying parasites – they indicate serious health problems. Healthy turtles keep moving constantly, preventing these crustaceans from attaching. But when turtles are weak, injured, or sick, their shells become a perfect home for these pests.
Debilitated Turtle Syndrome
This condition, known as Debilitated Turtle Syndrome, is not just a cosmetic issue. The barnacles make swimming harder, increase water resistance, and can cause skin irritation and damage, especially if the turtles already have open wounds.
Who Are These Turtles?
One turtle, named Frida, was found in the shallow waters of Centinera Bay near Banjole. She weighs about 400 grams and has a shell length of 14 cm, estimated to be about one year old. The other, named Havajka, was found near the beach of the same name in Verudela, weighs about 1 kg, and has a shell length of 20 cm, also estimated to be about one year old.
The Fight for Recovery
Experts immediately started treatment – glucose infusions, cleaning the shells from barnacles, and other necessary care. Further treatment will depend on X-rays and blood tests to assess their condition in detail.
Why Does This Matter?
These turtles are not just cute animals caught in trouble. They are part of the marine ecosystem, and their illness is a warning sign that something is wrong with our sea. Pollution, human impact, and climate change affect their health and survival.
What Can We Learn?
If you see a turtle in trouble, don’t ignore it. Every bit of help can save a life. And if you love the sea, think about how your actions affect these beautiful creatures.
Now, as Frida and Havajka fight for their lives, we wonder – how many more will fall victim to human neglect? If you have a similar story or ideas on how to help, drop a comment below. Maybe your idea will be the key to saving another sea turtle!
