Belgrade’s Sava Embankment is finally getting what it deserves – order and law! After decades of wild construction and illegal buildings, the state has decided to put an end to the shameless builders who brazenly occupied state land, the water source zone, and flood defense areas. In the latest operation, 19 illegal structures and 25 floating restaurants were removed, and owners can forget about any compensation since they built on someone else’s, state-owned land. Yes, you read that right – no permits, no rights, just brazen occupation of space that belongs to all of us.
This move is not just a fight against illegal construction but a systemic solution to a problem ignored for decades. The Sava embankment, which for years was full of weekend houses and floating restaurants built overnight, is now being returned to the citizens. There are plans for a complete reconstruction of 12 artesian wells along the Surčin field, which is crucial for the safe and efficient supply of drinking water to Belgrade.
But that’s not all! The embankment will be restored, and pedestrian and bicycle paths stretching 15.5 kilometers will be built. Imagine walking and cycling along the river without floating restaurants and illegal structures ruining the view and threatening safety. Also, the embankment near Block 45 and the Ostružnica bridge will be raised, and traffic will be redirected from the embankment to service roads, meaning an end to chaos and danger for pedestrians and cyclists.
After decades of neglect, Belgrade is finally getting a well-organized space on the banks of the Sava. The state has shown it can tackle a problem that was long taboo. But will this be the beginning of the end for illegal construction or just a temporary action? Time will tell.
If you’ve ever walked the Sava embankment and looked at those illegal structures, now you have a reason to be happy. But don’t fool yourself – the fight for our city and our space is just beginning. What do you think? Has the state finally stood up to arrogance, or is this just a show?
