The Euroleague is still shaking, and the main reason is Vasilije Micić, the Serbian basketball star who made a move this summer that shocked all of Europe. After months of saga and numerous offers from Europe’s biggest clubs like Fenerbahçe, Real Madrid, Olympiacos, and Red Star Belgrade, Micić chose Hapoel from Israel. Yes, you read that right — Hapoel! A club that was once in the shadows of giants has now landed a player worth 14 million euros, and Micić is not just a player — he also got a management stake in the club.
It all started back in December last year when Hapoel first contacted Micić. Greek coach Itudis, who spoke with Micić, revealed that the operation to bring the Serbian ace to Israel was long and the club was very persistent. During the hot summer, Hapoel also signed other significant players like Elijah Bryant, Dan O’Toole, and Tyler Ennis, with rumors that Kris Jones from Valencia might join them. Itudis emphasized that Hapoel will not be a one-man team but a team of many, with team spirit and a shared goal.
Signing Micić is a real bombshell on the Euroleague summer market. The club showed it is ready to fight with the best and does not plan to be just a passerby in the elite competition. Micić was wanted by many, but he chose Hapoel, surprising many but also showing that money and a stake in the club can be decisive factors.
At the same time, Serbian football is experiencing its own shocks — Marko Arnautović decided to return to Red Star Belgrade, which is a real bombshell in Serbian football this summer. Partizan was eliminated from the Europa League qualifiers, while Red Star is the most active club in the summer market. Serbian water polo players reached the quarterfinals of the World Championship, and Serbian basketball players were active in the NBA Summer League.
All in all, summer 2024 brings big changes and excitement in Serbian and European sports, and Micić’s move to Hapoel is definitely the number one topic. Is this the start of a new era for the Israeli club or just a short-lived sensation? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure — the Euroleague will never be the same again.
