The number of jackals in central Serbia is increasing, and they are increasingly being seen near urban settlements as they search for food in landfills. Estimates suggest there are between 30,000 and 40,000 of them, coming from Bulgaria and Romania. Jackals are not dangerous to humans except in cases of rabies, but due to the decreasing population in villages, they are becoming bolder. They feed on food scraps, and the presence of illegal dumps further attracts them. It is recommended that food scraps not be left near settlements to reduce their presence.
