The Tianshan Shengli Tunnel, the longest highway tunnel in the world, has been completed in China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The 22.13-kilometer-long tunnel will reduce travel time from several hours to about 20 minutes. The tunnel, which is part of the Urumqi–Yuli highway, connects the north and south of Xinjiang, and the highway is expected to be fully completed by 2025. Despite difficult conditions and complex geology, builders completed the tunnel in 52 months. The project will significantly shorten travel time.
