Criminal Complaint Against Metropolitan Metodije for Glorifying Criminal Formations and Violating Montenegro’s Constitution

The Center for Civic Rights filed a criminal complaint against Metropolitan Metodije Ostojić of the Budimlja-Nikšić Serbian Orthodox Church for hate speech, glorifying criminal formations, and violating Montenegro’s constitutional order. During a liturgy at the Podmaine Monastery, Metodije made statements considered an open incitement to intolerance, glorifying the Chetnik movement and its commanders, denying the antifascist tradition, and insulting state symbols. The complaint highlights that his statements contradict articles of Montenegro’s criminal code and constitution that prohibit hate speech and glorification of war criminals. The Center demands an urgent investigation and initiation of criminal proceedings to protect public order and human rights.

Political Perspectives:

Left: Left-leaning sources emphasize the importance of upholding Montenegro’s constitutional and secular values, condemning hate speech and historical revisionism. They focus on the dangers of glorifying fascist and war criminal groups, viewing the complaint as a necessary step to protect social cohesion and minority rights.

Center: Centrist sources report the facts of the complaint and the statements made by Metropolitan Metodije, highlighting the legal framework and the need for due process. They present the issue as a conflict between freedom of expression and the prohibition of hate speech, emphasizing the importance of maintaining public order and constitutional values.

Right: Right-leaning sources may emphasize the religious and national identity aspects, possibly portraying Metropolitan Metodije’s statements as a defense of Serbian heritage and historical narratives. They might criticize the complaint as an attack on religious freedom or an overreach by the state, focusing on the context of political tensions in Montenegro.
