In the heart of Zagreb, the strictly protected species of falcon, the kestrel, has built a nest in an opening on the facade of a building at Nova Ves 72. However, renovation works carried out by the company Loading d.o.o. threaten this habitat and it could be destroyed. Four young kestrels are in the fledging phase and will soon become independent. Residents and experts warn about the damage caused by the works and the destruction of old trees in the courtyard. Kestrels are adaptable and often nest in urban environments in Zagreb, but human disturbance and the rapid growth of the urban crow population further threaten their numbers. EU and Croatian legislation strictly protects this species and their nests, and intentional destruction of nests and disturbance of birds during the breeding period is prohibited.
