Months-long university blockades in Serbia have led to the largest exodus of Serbian students abroad in recent months. Students who were previously committed to studying in Serbia are now massively enrolling in universities in regional countries such as Slovenia, Montenegro, Austria, Hungary, and Italy, where study conditions are better and more accessible. Universities in the region are even planning to attract these students by offering programs and incentives. MTEL director Jelena Trivan warns that this trend will have long-term negative consequences for Serbia’s educational system, economy, and demographics, as the best students leave and universities are left without enough enrolled students. Professor of Law at the University of Belgrade Vladan Petrov points out that the University of Belgrade has become a backup option, while parents and students seek safer and more stable educational options abroad. This situation threatens the credibility and financial stability of Serbian universities.
