Science Confirms the Soothing Effect of Talking to One’s Mother

Scientific research has shown that talking to one’s mother, either in person or over the phone, significantly reduces stress levels. A study conducted at the University of Wisconsin-Madison found that talking to one’s mother increases oxytocin levels, a hormone associated with bonding and empathy, while simultaneously decreasing cortisol levels, the stress hormone. This effect is similar to the mother being physically present and providing a hug. In contrast, communication via SMS messages did not have the same soothing effect. These findings confirm the importance of maternal support in stressful situations and emphasize that it is never too late to talk to one’s mother.
