Plenković rejects support for Artuković Kunšt as Supreme Court President

Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković stated that the ruling coalition will not support Sandra Artuković-Kunšt for the position of Supreme Court President, a candidate proposed by the President of the Republic. Her candidacy did not receive support from the parliamentary judiciary committee, the Supreme Court, or the ruling coalition due to an unsatisfactory performance and references. Plenković emphasized that the decision is based on merit rather than political bargaining. He also noted that this will not affect other open issues, including the selection of diplomatic representatives. The Prime Minister expressed regret over a recent security incident within the Croatian military and praised the police for quickly identifying the perpetrators.

Political Perspectives:

Left: Left-leaning outlets emphasize the importance of judicial independence and merit-based appointments, highlighting the rejection of Artuković-Kunšt as a positive step against political interference in the judiciary. They may also critique the President’s role in politicizing the judiciary.

Center: Centrist sources report the facts neutrally, focusing on the procedural aspects of the nomination and rejection, emphasizing the merit-based decision and the separation of powers. They highlight the statements of Plenković and the official reasons for the rejection.

Right: Right-leaning media may emphasize the ruling coalition’s firm stance against a candidate they view as unsuitable, supporting Plenković’s decision as protecting the judiciary’s integrity. They may also stress the government’s achievements and stability, downplaying political conflicts.
