Detention lifted for suspects in death of 16 at Novi Sad train station

The appellate court in Novi Sad lifted the detention of five suspects in the investigation of the deadly collapse of a canopy at the Novi Sad railway station on November 1, which resulted in 16 deaths. The court partially upheld the defense’s appeals and replaced detention with electronic monitoring and other restrictions. The tragedy sparked months of protests and accusations against authorities for corruption and poor execution of reconstruction works at the station. Among the accused are former directors and engineers responsible for construction and supervision. The indictment charges 13 individuals with crimes against public safety and causing general danger.

Political Perspectives:

Left: Left-leaning outlets emphasize the systemic issues such as corruption, negligence, and poor governance that led to the tragedy. They highlight the protests and public outcry demanding accountability from the authorities and criticize the slow judicial process and leniency in lifting detentions.

Center: Center-leaning sources report the facts of the court decision and the ongoing investigation, focusing on the legal procedures and the charges against the accused. They provide balanced coverage of the tragedy, the court rulings, and the responses from officials and the public.

Right: Right-leaning media tend to focus on the legal aspects and the presumption of innocence of the accused, emphasizing the court’s decision to lift detention as a sign of fair judicial process. They may downplay the role of systemic corruption and instead highlight individual responsibility and the technical aspects of the case.
