A painting purchased at a garage sale in Minnesota has been identified as a previously unknown portrait of Vincent van Gogh, painted during his stay at a French psychiatric hospital in 1889. Experts confirmed the painting’s authenticity by analyzing the canvas weave and paint pigments. The portrait of a fisherman, inspired by the work of Danish artist Michael Ancher, represents one of Van Gogh’s adaptations of other artists’ works. Researchers also found hair in the canvas, but DNA analysis was unsuccessful due to sample degradation.
