While Europe whines about Russian gas and plans bans, Serbia is bragging about a new gas deal with Russia supposedly to be signed on September 20. But hold on, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows! With storage facilities only 55.7% full and plans for a new storage site in Tilva, Serbia is playing with fire as the EU demands market liberalization. Dušan Bajatović from Srbijagas warns that opening the market could lead to speculation, gas shortages, and price hikes. Not to mention US sanctions that keep getting delayed but not lifted. So while everyone pretends energy security is guaranteed, the reality is Serbia is teetering on the edge of an energy mess. Who’s going to pay the price? You, of course!
