Imagine this: while many complain that city life is cramped, noisy, and hopeless, young people in Serbia are getting a chance to move to the countryside – and not just anywhere, but into real houses with big yards! Yes, you read that right. Minister Milan Krkobabić and the government have opened a competition for the allocation of rural houses with yards, and this year several million dinars have been set aside from the budget for this purpose. The goal? To give young people a roof over their heads and a stable source of livelihood. And this is not empty talk – several contracts have already been signed with new owners, and the number of revived households has risen to over 300!
The largest yard, nearly 68 ares, went to the right hands – a young couple with three children who plan to grow fruit and raise pigs. Svetlana and Mario, after years of renting, finally have their own home in the village of Galovići near Kosjerić. They bought piglets, seedlings of strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries, ready to realize their dreams of a small farm. And they are not alone – about ten families with three or four children are moving into villages across Serbia, from Odžaci to Knjaževac, where young people with higher education choose to swap city chaos for rural peace.
Žarko, a programmer from Zrenjanin, and his wife, a sociology student, moved to Bašaid near Kikinda. They say the city has become cramped and noisy, and the village offers a healthier environment for raising their child. Their message? The program changes lives, and they hope more young people will follow their example.
This project is not just about houses – it’s about bringing life back to abandoned villages, about giving young people a chance to become independent and build a future. With an average age of recipients just 29 years, it’s clear the government is serious about youth. And while many complain about lack of opportunities, these people get not only a roof over their heads but a chance to create, work, and live with dignity.
So who says the village is dead? Now is the time for the village to return to the youth – and in style! What do you think about this crazy venture? Would you swap city stress for rural calm? Drop a comment, let’s see who’s in and who’s out in this village revolution!
