Belgrade is on fire with student protests, and President Aleksandar Vučić is not holding back! Ahead of the big rally on June 28, Vučić made it clear that the state will do everything to prevent violence and ensure no one gets hurt — but also hinted that if necessary, the state will intervene. It all started after the tragic collapse of a canopy at the Novi Sad railway station on November 1 last year, which killed 16 people. Students blocked over 60 faculties across all four state universities, demanding accountability from the government for corruption and poor construction work. However, the authorities have labeled the protests a “colored revolution,” and the protesters as terrorists, fascists, and Nazis! Meanwhile, police and security agencies have arrested five people suspected of planning a violent change of government and overthrowing the constitutional order. The lawyer of one of the detainees says the campaign against them is the harshest yet, while Vučić declares the state will win and will show force if needed. In another article, Vučić hopes not to have to use force but makes it clear he is ready for anything. Arrests have been coming in a stream, including a former president of the military union and a vice president of a party. This all points to a serious crisis in Serbia, where students and the government are at war with words and actions, and citizens watch to see if the state will resort to repression. Vučić and his media do not mince words — calling the protests terrorist acts, while students claim they fight for justice and accountability. Will Serbia see bloody clashes or will it end peacefully? One thing is certain — June 28 could be a day to remember. What do you think? Is Vučić right or do the students have the right to demand accountability? Drop a comment, let the people’s voice be heard!
