A New Era in Oncology: KBC Osijek Unveils Two New Linear Accelerators Worth Five Million Euros

At the Clinical Hospital Center Osijek, two new linear accelerators for radiotherapy, worth over five million euros, have been put into operation, with a third device in the final preparation phase for launch. This investment, part of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan worth over 85 million euros, significantly enhances the quality and availability of oncology care in eastern Croatia. Currently, three linear accelerators operate at KBC Osijek, and by the end of the year, full operation of four devices is expected. The Ministry of Health has secured additional staffing resources to optimally utilize the new equipment. KBC Osijek director Krunoslav Šego emphasized that the new equipment contributes to strengthening the expert staff and improving working conditions in healthcare, while the Ministry of Health highlights that Croatia will have a total of 25 linear accelerators in public healthcare by the end of the year, surpassing the EU average per capita. The procurement of new devices is part of a broader project that includes equipping six hospitals with state-of-the-art oncology equipment, establishing a national oncology network, and a unified national oncology data base. The first patients have already started treatment on the new devices, meaning that the availability of modern therapies for people with malignant diseases in eastern Croatia has significantly improved. This investment represents a huge step forward in the fight against cancer and shows that the health of citizens and working conditions of healthcare workers are a priority.
