EXPLOSION IN A MILITARY COMPLEX THAT KEEPS TAKING LIVES: Oštarije near Ogulin is not just an abandoned military site, but a real death trap! Over the past few decades, this complex has become synonymous with tragedy and danger. In the last three months alone, pyrotechnician Matej Robić lost his life in an explosion while working on clearing explosive remnants. This is not the first accident at this location – 11 years ago, another pyrotechnician died here, and during the war, 21 Croatian Army conscripts died during training, with some left 100% disabled.
The huge former Yugoslav People’s Army military complex, covering 1.86 million square meters, is covered with forest and shrubs and still hides explosive remnants. Although there are plans for its demolition and clearance, tragedies continue to happen. Local officials and residents are outraged because the area was never properly handed over for management, and access roads are often unsafe. Scrap collectors have been entering the complex through forest paths for years, exposing themselves to great danger.
The Ministry of Defense halted demolition work after the latest tragedy, and an investigation is underway. However, the question remains – how many more lives will be lost before this military complex is cleared and secured? Oštarije is not just ruins from the past but an active danger threatening anyone who approaches.
If you think this is just another sad news story, think again. Such tragedies are the result of irresponsibility and neglect of people’s safety. Will someone finally take responsibility and stop this bloody chain of accidents? Or will we continue to watch history repeat itself while lives are lost in silence?
