China Furious Over NATO Accusations
China exploded in anger after NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte warned about China’s massive military buildup and its support for Russia in the war against Ukraine. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun accused Rutte of spreading disinformation and fueling global tensions, calling China’s military development “normal.” China claims NATO is using these allegations as an excuse to drastically increase military spending and expand its influence in the Indo-Pacific region.
NATO Focuses on China and Russia
NATO, led by the US, increasingly views China as a systemic threat due to its growing global influence, cyber activities, espionage, and strategic cooperation with Russia. Rutte emphasized the importance of cooperation with Asia-Pacific countries like Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand, especially in light of China’s military strengthening. The UK and Australia have formed the AUKUS security partnership, which includes the delivery of nuclear submarines and enhanced patrols in the region.
Aid to Russia and Sanctions
China helps Russia by purchasing large quantities of oil, enabling it to bypass Western sanctions, although Beijing denies sending weapons. NATO accuses China and North Korea of bolstering Russian forces in the war against Ukraine, which China categorically denies.
NATO’s Military Spending Increase
At the NATO summit in The Hague, member states agreed on a target to increase military spending to 5% of GDP, which sparked opposition from Spain, currently the lowest spender in the alliance at just 1.24% of GDP. Spain managed to soften the obligation’s wording, arguing that 5% would be unreasonable and counterproductive for them.
Ukraine as a Testing Ground for Weapons
Ukraine has become a battlefield for testing new types of weapons, including ground robots used by both Russian and Western forces. European armies are closely monitoring these changes and adapting their technologies based on Ukraine’s experience.

NATO and China are mutually accusing each other of spreading tensions and military hysteria.
