EU in Serbia Tries to Rescue REM Members Selection, Opposition in Shock!
Ready for another political circus? The European Union in Serbia is organizing a meeting with candidates for the Council of the Regulatory Body for Electronic Media (REM), but the opposition sees this as pressure and an attempt to save a process that has long stalled!
What’s going on?
The Committee for Culture and Information invited members of parliament to a meeting at the European House on June 27. The topic? Reviewing candidates for the REM Council. But the opposition refuses to participate. Why? They say it’s a violation of the law and would suspend the work of the Assembly.
Why did everything stop?
The old competition for selecting REM members was unanimously canceled on April 28 after students blocked RTS and other buildings for 14 days. The new competition failed in mid-June when 16 candidates withdrew their applications. Why? Due to serious legal violations and manipulation in the selection process.
Who’s to blame?
Independent groups pointed out numerous breaches of legal provisions and bias in the process. Many candidates did not meet professional requirements, and the organizations proposing candidates were linked to the authorities or suspicious.
What is the EU trying to do?
The European Union clearly wants to save this process and hold the REM members’ selection. But the opposition believes it’s just an attempt to legitimize an illegal process.
Why does it matter?
REM is a key media regulator in Serbia. If the selection is not done legally, it could seriously undermine media independence and freedom of information.
Conclusion
While the EU tries to “help,” the opposition shouts “no!” And we watch the political drama unfold before our eyes. Will REM members be chosen by the rules, or will everything remain in the shadow of doubts and pressure?
