Belgrade was thrown into chaos due to the blockade of one of the busiest intersections in the city center! The informal group “Rebel University” has been holding the intersection of Kneza Miloša and Nemanjina streets since June 9. Traffic was completely stopped, public transport rerouted, and citizens suffered huge traffic jams. All because of demands that sound like they came from a student novel: disbanding the working group drafting a new higher education law, adopting budget quotas for university admissions, and abolishing the regulation on university work standards. The government partially gave in – the working group was disbanded, but the regulation was not abolished, only “frozen.” The deadline for meeting the demands was June 26 and 27, when a government session was scheduled. After three weeks of blockade, the group announced they would leave the intersection, but the damage was done. Is this the start of a new era of student activism or just another drama in downtown Belgrade? If you got stuck in traffic, you know the answer! What do you think about these demands? Are the students right or did they go too far? Drop a comment and let’s see who’s for and who’s against!
