Explosive Tragedy in Oštarije: Demolition Expert Killed at Former Military Depot!
Have you heard about Matej Robić? A 32-year-old demolition expert who lost his life while clearing explosives at a former military complex in Oštarije near Josipdol. Yes, another tragedy at a place that should be safe, but clearly isn’t!
What exactly happened?
On June 26th, around 9:55 AM, Matej was working outside the fenced area of the former JNA depot, removing leftover explosive devices. Despite the area being marked with warning tapes and supposedly safe, an explosion of an unknown explosive killed this expert.
Not the first time!
This is not the first tragedy at this location. About 11 years ago, another demolition expert died here. The complex was once the largest weapons and ammunition depot of the 5th Army District, and after the JNA withdrawal in October 1991, it remained full of dangerous explosives. Explosions echoed for hours that day, and decades later, we still pay the price for negligence and danger.
Safety procedures?
Matej was following all safety protocols, but it wasn’t enough. Police conducted an investigation, and the case will be forwarded to the County State Attorney’s Office in Karlovac.
Why does this keep happening?
Because the remnants of war are still here, hidden and deadly. Workers removing mines and explosives risk their lives daily. Even though the job requires maximum attention and expertise, the danger is enormous.
What can we learn?
We must not forget the past and must invest in safety and equipment for those working in demining. Every life is precious, and Matej paid the highest price.
Just imagine…
A young man of 32, full of life and plans, died doing a job essential for all our safety. Will anything change, or will we keep waiting for the next tragedy?
