Sharks are key predators in the oceans, maintaining balance and health of marine ecosystems. However, around 73 million sharks are killed annually due to the shark fin industry. This staggering number pushes many species to the brink of extinction. The US passed a law in 2011 banning the sale, possession, and distribution of shark fin products, supported by both Republicans and Democrats, including Senator Cory Booker, who warned about the catastrophic consequences of this practice.
Yet, Kim Jong Un not only ignores these bans but enjoys this controversial delicacy, further proving his disregard for the world and nature. Shark fin soup, while prized in parts of Asia as a symbol of wealth and luxury, actually contributes more to the texture than the flavor of the dish, and its production is cruel and harmful.
While the world fights to save oceans and their inhabitants, Kim Jong Un continues to enjoy luxuries that destroy nature. Will he ever realize the damage he causes? Probably not.
