Vidovdan on the Edge: Dačić and Vučić Promise Peace, But Police Are Ready for Anything!
Vidovdan, June 28, a day meant for peace and remembrance, is this year charged with tension in Belgrade that can’t be ignored. Interior Minister Ivica Dačić made it crystal clear: protests will be peaceful or the police will crack down hard. Dačić warned that any violence will be stopped and punished, with police deployed all over the city to keep order.
“Don’t attack the police, don’t destroy institutions, don’t start fights!” Dačić said, stressing that police won’t react immediately, only if forced. “That’s not weakness, that’s strength!”
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić called the so-called “colored revolution” a finished story and hopes authorities won’t have to use force. Still, Vučić made it clear that those causing trouble will be held responsible.
These two power players are sending mixed signals: calling for peace on one hand, threatening sanctions and police action on the other. Will Vidovdan pass as a day of remembrance or a day of clashes? The police are ready, but are the citizens?
