Voluntary Blood Donation on Vidovdan: Heroes Among Us or Forgotten Lifesavers?

Vidovdan is the day when many citizens of Serbia decide to do something big – voluntarily donate blood. Yes, you read that right! While some sit around complaining about how cruel the world is, these people get up and donate blood, saving lives. On Vidovdan, June 28th, you can show up at certain locations and become a hero. But it’s not just that day – the Institute for Blood Transfusion of Serbia at Svetog Save Street 39 operates every weekday from 7 AM to 7 PM, and on weekends and holidays from 8 AM to 3 PM. Any healthy adult can donate blood, of course, after a medical check-up that ensures donating blood is safe for both the donor and the recipient.

But let’s be real – how many of us actually know about these opportunities? How many of us really think about becoming blood donors? While the media spins stories about violence, extreme heat, and other problems, the heroes who donate blood remain in the shadows. Is that fair? Of course not!

Just imagine – one dose of your blood can save three lives! Yet, the number of voluntary donors in Serbia is not what it should be. Why? Maybe because society doesn’t appreciate this act enough, or because people aren’t well informed. But if you’re healthy and between 18 and 65 years old, why not do something that can change someone’s life?

And don’t forget, donating blood is not just an act of kindness, but an act of courage. It’s not easy to stand up and say, “Here, I’ll give a part of myself so someone else can live.” But that’s exactly what blood donors across Serbia do, especially on Vidovdan. So next time you hear about blood donation, remember these heroes and maybe decide to become one yourself.

And hey, if you have a funny or touching story about donating blood, or maybe a weird reason why you haven’t donated yet, share it! Let’s hear from those ready to change the world, drop by drop.
