Water on the Edge: Serbia Battles Shortages Amid Scorching Heat!

Scorching Heat and Water Shortages in Serbia: Who’s Going Thirsty Next?

Summer 2023 in Serbia isn’t just hot – it’s a full-blown nightmare! Extreme temperatures and a dry spell have pushed water supplies to the brink. The municipality of Arilje has already rolled out a water shut-off plan for certain neighborhoods.

Who’s Getting Cut Off?

The hardest hit are the high-altitude settlements where water pressure is low. Places like Vrane, Grdovići, and Virovo Lopaš will be without water from 10 PM to 6 AM.

Reservoir R2, supplying parts of Raškove Bare, Bogojevići, Latvica, and others, faces restrictions from 10 PM to 6 AM and again from 9 AM to 8 PM. Water will flow only between 6-9 AM and 8-10 PM.

What Are Officials Saying?

Predrag Maslar, head of the Emergency Situation Headquarters and mayor of Arilje, warns that if these measures don’t work, a state of emergency and full water restrictions across the municipality will be declared.

JKP Zelen Arilje and inspectors are cracking down on wasteful water use to keep supplies flowing for everyone.

Belgrade Joins the Water-Saving Party

JKP Belgrade Waterworks has also begged citizens to use water wisely. No filling pools, no watering lawns or crops unnecessarily. Only essentials like drinking, cooking, and hygiene should get priority.

One day alone saw massive water use across Belgrade, straining the system. If this keeps up, who knows how long the taps will run?

Why Is This a Big Deal?

High heat and drought are global issues, but Serbia is feeling the sting hard. Water, once taken for granted, is now a luxury. Restrictions aren’t just annoying – they threaten health, hygiene, and daily life.

What Can We Learn?

This is a wake-up call. Wasteful water use, like filling pools or washing cars during shortages, isn’t just selfish – it’s dangerous for the community.

Bottom Line

Serbia is on the edge of a water crisis, and summer 2023 is proof we all need to get serious. Restrictions are here, and if we don’t change, they’ll get worse.

So, what about you? Have you cut back on water use, or are you filling that pool like there’s no tomorrow? Drop a comment and let’s see who’s the real summer hero and who’s just thirsty!
