Vidovdan at Ravanica: Patriarch Porfirije Leads Liturgy, Army Guards Honorary Watch, and History Comes Alive!
Vidovdan, one of the most important Serbian holidays, takes on epic significance this year at the Ravanica Monastery. Serbian Patriarch Porfirije will personally lead the holy liturgy in honor of Saint Prince Lazar, whose endowment is Ravanica. But that’s not all – the honorary guard beside the casket with the relics of Saint Prince Lazar will be held by cadets from the Military Academy, the University of Defense, and students from the Criminal-Police University. Yes, you read that right – the army and police together guard the shrine!
The event began yesterday with awards given to the best students, and the patriarch served a festive vigil. Today at 8:30 AM, a memorial service for the Kosovo heroes will be held by Metropolitan Ignatije of Braničevo, followed by the holy liturgy at 9 AM led by Patriarch Porfirije along with Metropolitans Jovan of Šumadija, Ignatije of Braničevo, and Arsenije of Niš.
This ceremony is not just a religious event but a powerful reminder of the historical and national values symbolized by Vidovdan. Saint Prince Lazar and his heroes from Kosovo and Metohija represent the pillar of Serbian identity and resistance, and their sacrifice is still honored with deep respect.
However, while these magnificent celebrations take place in Ravanica, Serbia faces numerous challenges – from extreme heat waves affecting the country, to security issues and street violence, as well as social problems like drug addiction. All this casts a shadow over the day but also reminds us how important it is to unite and strengthen shared values.
Vidovdan is not just a historical date – it is a day to celebrate courage, faith, and unity. And this year, with Patriarch Porfirije at the helm and soldiers as the honorary guard, that message rings louder than ever.
So, what do you think? Is this the right way to preserve tradition and history? Or is the army too involved in religious ceremonies? Drop a comment and let the people’s voice be heard!
