Vidovdan Heroes and Their Untold Stories: Tears, Courage, and Oblivion

Vidovdan is the day Serbia remembers its heroes, but how well do we really know their stories? President Aleksandar Vučić recently awarded honors to brave individuals whose sacrifices and sufferings have been overshadowed. Vesna Stojković, a heroic mother from Vranje, protected her baby with her body during the NATO aggression, losing both legs. Her battle didn’t end with the war — complications followed her until her death in December last year. Her name now graces a medal received by her son-in-law, Stefan Aleksić.

Another touching story is about Predrag Peđa Leovac, a young officer born in Pljevlja, who died in the Battle of Košare. His courage and dedication to the army are legendary — despite being severely wounded, he calmed his soldiers and continued fighting. His father Mile received the order with tears in his eyes, and Peđa’s death remains a symbol of heroism and sacrifice.

At the award ceremony, Vučić also honored Jelena Buhač Radojčić, a survivor of the Ustaše death camp Jasenovac, who inspired the film “Dara from Jasenovac.” The president emphasized that only unity and solidarity can build a stable Serbia, while on Vidovdan we remember our history and roots, despite criticisms and accusations that try to divide us.

These stories remind us of the price of freedom and the bravery of ordinary people in hard times. But while we celebrate heroes, society faces many problems — from street violence to economic hardships and social divisions. Vidovdan is not just a day of remembrance but a day to think about how to build a better future together.

If you feel these stories are forgotten or undervalued, you’re not alone. Share your thoughts, tell your stories, or just drop a comment — because heroes deserve to be heard, and we deserve not to forget them.
