Student Protests in Belgrade: Police Brutality and Student Resolve Escalate

Belgrade is burning with student rage! After seven months of protests, the blockade students are not backing down one bit. Police attacks on students, blocking access to a temporary hospital for the injured, and brutal use of force in the city center cast a dark shadow over the government. Biology faculty students were attacked by police, and injured citizens were prevented from reaching help at the teacher’s faculty, sparking outrage and demands for an immediate end to violence. Police summoned Political Science faculty students for interrogations using private phone numbers, seen by students as political repression and intimidation. Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić predicted violence before the protests and vowed the state would prevail, while Belgrade’s streets became scenes of clashes with tear gas, beatings, and dozens arrested and injured. Students and citizens gathered at Slavija Square, paid tribute to victims of the Novi Sad tragedy, and demanded the dissolution of the National Assembly and early elections. The government responded with arrests, a media campaign of fear, and pressure on professors and artists supporting the students. This all echoes the dark days of repression in the 1990s. The blockade students declare: “We will not back down, we will not lose!” This is not just a fight for education, but for Serbia’s future. What do you think? Is this a fight for justice or chaos used by the government to crack down? Drop a comment, let the people’s voice be heard!
