Two Years of Grief and Fury in Jasenovik Village Near Niš: Najdan Krstić, the Man Who Helped Everyone, Lost His Life Due to Negligence!
Today marks two full years since the death of Najdan Krstić (56), a beloved neighbor from the village of Jasenovik near Niš. His family and villagers still cannot get over the loss of a man who was the backbone of the community, tragically killed in an accident that could have been prevented.
How Did the Tragedy Happen?
On that fateful June 29, Najdan went to the store to buy bread. On the way back, neighbor Zvonko Đ. (53) gave him a ride on a tractor. However, just a few hundred meters from the house, the tractor’s right wheel fell into a hole, hidden under soil, and the tractor slid into an abyss. Najdan did not survive the fall, while Zvonko was rushed to the hospital with severe chest injuries and spent several days in an induced coma, eventually becoming the second victim of this accident.
Why Did the Accident Occur?
The village is in shock because the accident is believed to be a direct result of the negligence of the company that dug up the road to lay cables but failed to properly repair the area afterward. The hole where the tractor wheel fell was poorly marked and covered with soil, leading to the fatal fall.
Who Was Najdan?
Najdan Krstić was not a wealthy man. He lived alone in a dilapidated house, never married, and villagers remember him as a kind, hardworking man always ready to help anyone in need. His sister, Nadica Prokić, tearfully said Najdan never hurt anyone, rarely drank alcohol, and worked wherever he could earn some money. He didn’t have health insurance and refused social assistance, probably out of pride.
The Village Still Mourns
Villagers lit candles at the accident site and cannot understand how such a tragedy happened. Najdan was the village’s pillar, a man who walked everywhere and helped everyone, and now he is gone forever. His death left a deep mark on the community, and many blame the negligence and carelessness of the authorities.

This tragedy is a warning to all of us not to let such things happen again. Negligence and disregard for safety in rural areas can have deadly consequences. Najdan’s death is not just a personal tragedy for his family but a lesson for the whole society.
